The Goonies: A Tale of Treasure, Friends, and Being Brave Together

My person and I discovered this amazing story during one of our movie nights (they call it a “classic,” which I think means it’s been making people happy for a really long time). It’s about these kids who call themselves The Goonies, and let me tell you, it made me forget about my evening treat countdown completely – that’s how exciting it was!

You see, these young friends are about to lose their homes in this place called the Goondocks (I wonder if it’s anything like that mysterious space behind the bookshelf I’ve been trying to explore). Instead of just accepting it, they go on this incredible adventure after finding an old treasure map. I totally understand the urge to investigate mysterious things – though I usually stick to investigating suspicious shadows and that one squeaky floorboard.

What really got me was how these kids stick together, even when things get scary. There’s Data with his clever inventions (reminds me of when I figured out how to open the treat cabinet), Mouth who talks a lot (like my person when they’re on those “phone calls”), and Chunk who’s really good at being himself (I respect that – being yourself is important). But my favorite might be Mikey, who believes in the adventure even when others don’t. Sometimes you need someone like that to help you be brave.

They meet these not-so-nice people called the Fratellis (they remind me of that loud garbage truck that comes by every week – very disturbing), and there’s this big fellow named Sloth who turns out to be much kinder than he looks. That part really spoke to me – you should never judge someone just because they seem different. I mean, my person thought I was just a scraggly little rescue at first, but look at us now!

The best parts are when they’re exploring this amazing underground place full of booby traps (though I don’t understand why anyone would want to trap boobies). It’s like when I explore under the bed, but WAY more exciting. There’s water slides, a pirate ship (which I’m told is like a big floating box), and something called One-Eyed Willy’s treasure. I’m not sure who Willy is, but he certainly knew how to hide his shiny things!

What makes this movie really special isn’t just the treasure hunt – it’s about how these friends face their fears together. Like when I finally decided to check out what was in that scary paper bag (it was just more paper, by the way). The Goonies never give up on each other, even when things get really tough. They also learn that the real treasure isn’t always the glittery stuff – sometimes it’s having people who believe in you.

My person says this movie came out in 1985, but its message about friendship and being brave feels as fresh as my morning stretch. It’s got some scary parts (I may have hidden behind my favorite pillow once or twice), but that’s what makes the triumph at the end feel so good.

Final Rating: 5 out of 5 sunbeams!

This movie reminds us that amazing adventures can happen right where you live, and that being scared is okay as long as you have friends by your side. Also, there’s a part with a water slide that made me very glad I was watching from my cozy spot on the couch.
